Mid-Week Motorsport Headlines – 20th May 2022

F1

Apparently, the New York mayor has offered F1 a site for a potential race in the future. Yet the boss of Liberty Media then said that having another race in the USA would be too much, and it would be too difficult to get a race to happen in New York. I think it is good that they aren’t going all in on another race in the States, as we are already planning too many as it is!

Haas does not seem phased about its 2 month wait for upgrades, despite the fast paced development of other teams this year. Speaking of upgrades, both Ferrari and Mercedes are bringing major ones this weekend, which could help their overall pace, especially for Mercedes.

There will be no replacement for the Russian Grand Prix, keeping the schedule at 22 races. This is another smart move, as having more races just puts a greater strain on those involved in the sport.

De Vries and Vips will run in FP1 for Williams and Red Bull respectively, with both trying to secure a spot on the grid in the future. The teams are doing this as they have to run a rookie driver in two FP1 sessions each year, a good initiative to help drivers reach F1.

IndyCar

With practice underway for the Indy 500, various teams are looking strong already, including Chip Ganassi Racing and Dale Coyne Racing. Impressively no one has crashed yet, and hopefully that will continue for the next few days. Wednesday was rained out, but that doesn’t seem to have phased many drivers, given how much practice they get.

For the Detroit GP this year, they will return to the usual knockout format for qualifying. For many years, the grid was decided for the double header through two separate groups of qualifying, where one group would decide one side of the grid, with the other group doing the other side. Which ever group had the fastest lap time in it, would start on the inside.

Formula E

Out of nowhere, McLaren has brought the Mercedes FE team once they finish this season. It was expected that Abt would take over the running, but instead the Automotive and Racing giant will take up the reigns. It is unclear who will power them, and indeed who their drivers will be, but this is another sport that McLaren is growing into. They just have to be careful that they don’t get spread too thinly.

MotoGP

Ducati believe that their riders will not want to leave for other teams in the future, and you can understand why, as they are in a really strong position right now. There are 3 riders battling for the second factory seat, and there aren’t really any teams which they can bargain with, as all the others have their weaknesses compared to Ducati.
